This is a repost about a Google Earth File I created that highlights the Battle of Fort Sumter which occurred 152 years ago today.













To commemorate the start of the Civil War on this 150th anniversary I have created a Google Earth file of the Battle of Fort Sumter

This file contains:

• 3D version of Fort Sumter before it was attacked
• 3D version of the Floating Battery of Charleston that was used to fire on Fort Sumter
• Historical map overlays of the locations of various Confederate Batteries that fired on Fort Sumter.
• These maps come from Library of Congress and the National Archives 
• Geo-located Civil War Era photos of the damage Fort Sumter endured and the locations of the Confederate batteries. These photos also come from Library of Congress and the National Archives
• Twitter Feeds of the Washington Post's twitter campaign of the Civil War
• Links to Qwiki and Wikipedia articles and media about the Battle and various locations

Back Track: This Day in Civil War History, December 30, 1860

I somehow missed this building, One of the few surviving buildings of the Charleston Arsenal.

"The Charleston Arsenal was a United States Army arsenal facility in Charleston, South Carolina seized by state militia at the outbreak of the American Civil War.

With the secession of South Carolina in late 1860, it became a target for Confederate sympathizers and local militia. South Carolina troops seized the arsenal in late December, and the Confederates held it for much of the war. Josiah Gorgas had the arsenal enlarged and modernized with the installation of steam power. For a time, it was used a barracks to house Confederate troops, including the 26th South Carolina. The arsenal was finally retaken by Union troops in 1865 when Charleston finally fell."

Secession Hall

This a model of Secession Hall in Charlestown, SC. 150 years ago today, "the Convention met in St. Andrews Hall on Broad Street an adopted the Ordinance of Secession on roll call vote. On the question being put, "Will the Convention adopt the Ordinance?" it passed in the affirmative. Yeas, 169; Nays, none. "

South Carolina State Capitol

"The South Carolina State House is the state capitol building of the U.S. state of South Carolina. The building houses the South Carolina General Assembly and the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. It is located in the capital city of Columbia near the corner of Gervais and Assembly Streets.

The South Carolina State House was first designed by Vienna-born architect John Niernsee. Construction began in 1851, but the original architect was dismissed for fraud and dereliction of duty.[3] Soon thereafter, the structure was largely dismantled because of defective materials and workmanship. Work on the Niernsee redesigned structure began in 1855, slowed during the Civil War, and was suspended in 1865 as Sherman's Union Army entered Columbia on February 17. Although several public buildings were "put to the torch" when United States troops entered the city, the capitol building was not.

The structure was damaged by artillery and smoke from the burning of adjacent structures. Building work was finally completed in 1907.

The building's grounds are home to several monuments. On the north side is a monument to South Carolina's Confederate dead, a monument that includes a flagpole flying a traditional version of the Confederate battle flag. The monument was established following a controversy which arose during the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign about the Confederate flag flying over the dome of the State House.[7] The flag, originally placed over the dome in 1962,[8], was moved to its present location on July 1, 2000..

The grounds are also home to a monument dedicated to the contributions and history of African-Americans, as well as one on the southwest of the South Portico that is dedicated to fallen South Carolina law enforcement officers. The grounds also feature statues of Senators Strom Thurmond and Benjamin Tillman."
