Abraham Lincoln's Family Home

From Google Warehouse

"Abraham and Mary Lincoln built this house in 1844 shortly after they got married. Originally built as a one story home, The Lincolns enlarged the building to its current state of 2 stories in 1856 to accommodate for their growing family. After winning the Presidential election 1860, the house became a magnet for visitors, parades, and other political festivities. After a farewell reception in 1861, Lincoln sold most of his furniture and rented the home. Since then, the home was designated a National Historic Landmark in December 19, 1960 and got enrolled in the National Register of Historic Places in October 15, 1966. The building has recently gone to through a renovation, restoring the house to its original 1860 condition. The house is open to the public and draws around a million visitors a year. Weapons of War....The Hunley

Model by LennyB

From Wikipedia:

"H. L. Hunley was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War, but a large role in naval warfare. The Confederate States Ship (CSS) Hunley demonstrated both the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. The CSS Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy warship, although the vessel was also lost following the successful attack. The Confederates lost 32 crewmen in CSS Hunley's career. The submarine was renamed after the death of her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, and some time after she had been taken into the Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina."

The Archibald Borden House, Praire Grove Battlefield, Arkansas

"Prairie Grove is recognized nationally as one of America's most intact Civil War battlefields. The park protects the battle site and interprets the Battle of Prairie Grove, where on December 7, 1862, the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi clashed with the Union Army of the Frontier resulting in about 2,700 casualties in a day of fierce fighting. This marked the last major Civil War engagement in northwest Arkansas." (Quoted from battlefield website)

"The Archibald Borden House is the only structure in the Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park that is located on it's original site. The house was the site of some of the heaviest fighting in the engagement that took place on December 7, 1862."

The Chancellorsville Inn

The Chancellorsville Inn, in Chancellorsville, VA. A note about its history
from the website www.usa-civil-war.com

"When the Confederates finally overran Chancellorsville, their cannon fire destroyed the Chancellorsville inn. It was on the porch of this house that Union General Hooker was injured when cannon fire almost killed him. Some writers believe the injury affected his later decisions regarding the battle.

The 2000 photograph, below, shows the foundation of the inn which faces the now heavily traveled State Route 3 (The old Orange Turnpike). "

The 1863 photograph, above, shows the condition of the inn about one year after the battle.
